Dear New Runner, Yes You Need Running shoes!

I’m just starting out, do I really need new shoes?

I frequently get the question from new runners about whether they need to buy new or running specific shoes. The answer is almost always ‘yes’.

Usually they have some shoes that they’ve owned for a while and use around the house or to run errands that they find comfortable and are ‘sneakers’ so they want to just use those to start their run training. I understand the hesitancy to invest in new gear for something that you are just starting, but shoes are essential gear to a runner at any level of the sport.

Running is a high impact sport. Running shoes are designed to support the forces that a runner’s body faces during this effort.

If you are intending to use shoes that are not specifically running shoes, they likely do not have the correct design elements to facilitate your running goals. This is especially critical as a newer runner since your body is not used to the forces that running places on it.

Shoes have a lifespan. The cushioning effect comes from the foam used to build the core of the shoe. Over time this breaks down through use (or over time). If you have thought about using your everyday shoes or even running shoes that you have used for other things like general wear or walking, they likely do not have the structure and support to facilitate your running.

Running shoes may fit differently than a shoe you use for other things. Actually testing out a shoe by running in it is important to finding a shoe that will work for your specific running gait, foot structure, and preferences.

I recommend going to a running specialty store that can walk you through the options and allows you to try on a variety of different shoes, including giving you the opportunity to run in them. Usually, they will have a treadmill in the store or allow you to take them for a short trial outside.  Many of these stores also have a return policy that offers the return of a pair shoes within a specific amount of time if they end up not being the right shoes for you. This can be really important so that you have the opportunity to run in a more realistic setting.

If you are truly want to start your running journey right, protect yourself against injury, and give your self the best chance of success, invest in yourself by buying a pair of running shoes that fit. Although I do warn you, that getting new running shoes may become one of your favorite things!
